Thank you for taking the time to consider the English Major program at Saint Vincent College. We realize the importance of your college education and we hope our website will guide you in the right direction for studying English at Saint Vincent College. Our main goal is geared toward providing you with a background of our English Department and a clear understanding of the concentration requirements. We have established insightful links for you to check out-- course syllabi, writing contests and many more that we hope you will take advantage of. Please contact us if you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding our website. Our English Department is represented by seven full-time faculty members and three adjunct faculty members who are always available for meetings and conversations. The class size for the majority of our English courses ranges from ten to twenty-three students and on average there are twenty-four English courses offered each semester. Regardless of your chosen concentration, all English majors must complete the following courses: EL 200 Literary Criticism I; EL 201 Literary Criticism II; EL 202 Intermediate Writing; EL 310 Junior Seminar; EL 400 Senior Project Course requirements for each concentration are different and we recommend that you view our Concentrations link in order to find out more information on the concentration of your choice. The four English concentrations offered at Saint Vincent College are: Literature, English Secondary Education, Professional Writing, and Creative Writing. It is important that you choose the concentration that best fits your career goals. For example, most students intending on going to law school are recommended to concentrate in Literature. As well, individuals that want to become teachers are required to pursue the English Secondary Education Concentration. If you are interested in working in the business field or editing and publishing then the Professional Writing Concentration is your match. Lastly, those intending to pursue writing short stories, narratives, screen-plays etc. should lean towards the Creative Writing Concentration. We have made the contact information for faculty members involved with each concentration available to you, as well as contact information for at least one student currently studying in each concentration. Please take advantage of the contact information which can be found under the List of Majors and Minors link on the home page. Overall, studying English at Saint Vincent College is a great opportunity and viewing our website is only half as exciting as the classroom experience! The English professors at SVC know how to and always do "keep it real" by making their lectures stimulating and enjoyable. There are also many activities outside of the classroom for English majors to get involved with such as the English Club, Pre-Law Society, Sigma Tau Delta, Speakeasy, The Review and many more. Links for a description and contact information for all of the English major recreations can be found under the Activities heading found on the home page. We hope our detailed and easy-to-follow website helps answer any previous questions you may have had and positively influences your desire to study English at Saint Vincent College.
